How to build a cheese board at home

To build a cheese board, choose three or four cheeses of different textures, place them first, then add crackers and fruit around them, fill the gaps with nuts and dried fruit, and finish with a preserve or dip. Take the cheese out of the fridge about 30 minutes before serving.

Choose the cheeses

Pick a soft cheese, a firm cheese and a sharp or aged one. Add a fourth, such as a blue or a flavoured cheese, only if the group is adventurous.

Place the anchors

Set the cheeses down first, spaced apart, with a small knife at each. Cut one wedge or a few slices from each so guests know where to start.

Add crackers and fruit

Fan the crackers in two or three spots rather than one pile. Put grapes, figs or sliced apple and pear near the soft cheeses.

Fill the gaps

Tuck nuts, dried fruit and olives into every empty space so the board looks full and nothing slides.

Finish and serve

Add a small bowl of honey, preserve or dip. Serve at cool room temperature. If you would rather not assemble it, a House of Cheeseboards board arrives built.
