How much cheese per person for a cheese board?

Plan on roughly 60 to 90 grams of cheese per person when the board is a starter, and 120 to 170 grams per person when it is dinner. Three to four different cheeses is plenty. Treat these as a planning guide, not a rule.

Starter or dinner?

If guests will also eat a meal, the board is a starter and the lower range is enough. If the board is the meal, go to the higher range and add more fruit, nuts and crackers so the cheese is not doing all the work.

How many cheeses

Three to four is a good number: something soft, something firm and something sharp or aged. More than five and guests stop tasting. For a larger group, add more of the same cheeses rather than more types.

The rest of the board

Allow a few crackers and a handful of fruit and nuts per person, and one or two accompaniments such as a preserve, a dip or olives. For a mixed table, include a non-vegetarian option next to a vegetarian one and label both.

Skip the arithmetic

Our boards are sized by guest count: the Duet for one to two, the Classic for three to four, the Cheese Grazing Platter for six to eight, and the Grand boards for twelve to twenty.
